Although there are certainly more robust tools for editing video such as Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro, the VLC media player offers a quick and easy way to create short clips from any video (it doesn't have to be a file on your computer-you can make excerpts directly from a DVD being played as well). Including short video excerpts in presentations or digital publications is often helpful in illustrating a point or referencing some specific aspect of a work being analyzed. No, VLC is an amazing choice for anyone looking to play DVDs on their Windows system. VLC is available for the latest Linux, Android, IOS, Mac and Windows systems. There are a few versions of VLC available, which is perfect if you’re looking for an older release that lets you turn a dated laptop or system into a DVD or CD player on a budget. The interface also lacks that pizazz to separate it from other, more attractive players. There’s also no ability to record the screen smoothly. A lot of these stem from memory-related issues. Your worst experiences will be the odd bugs that happen on occasion. Most programs like this normally contain some form of adware or spyware, but you’ll never get those problems with VLC’s media player. Once it’s set up, you can run almost any media file. Windows 10 does not come with a native DVD player that’s why Windows 10 users might want to grab VLC. While most laptops or computers don’t come with a DVD drive pre-installed anymore, you’ll likely want to watch DVDs if you do have one. This media player will run all your video files and sound files, including broken ones that most other players can’t run. With the rise of more and more formats for videos and sound files, having a program such as VLC is a blessing. VLC is a media player that can run DVDs on Windows 10 at no cost, as well as many other playable files.

It’s simple and effective, setting things up for the vocal melody that comes in toward the end. There’s also that repeating motif that dances around the 2nd and minor 3rd intervals. The epic outro to “Purple Rain” – which takes up nearly two thirds of the song itself – stands out as some of Prince’s finest work on the six-string, wailing away in G minor pentatonic and occasionally including some more modal notes, like the minor 6th. For everyone else, this four-minute track remains a source of fascination more than 50 years on. Remarkably, Clapton is no fan of the performance: He complains that the band lost the “one” in the first verse of his second solo break, thereby throwing off his phrasing. His reimagining of the song as “Crossroads” further cemented a legacy that by then had earned him the nickname God.įamously recorded at San Francisco’s Fillmore West venue for supergroup Cream’s Wheels of Fire album, Clapton’s arrangement retains the soul and spirit of Johnson’s original but updates it for a contemporary audience raring to cut loose and be entertained by dazzlingly quick, passionate musicianship. It started as a blues tune called “Cross Road Blues” by Robert Johnson and became one of the finest examples of natural ability, soulfulness and showmanship from a virtuosic 22-year-old guitarist named Eric Clapton. The finest rock and roll cover of an acoustic blues song. “I put the record on and listened to it with my wife, and at the end of it I said, ‘I don’t know. “When the record came out, there was a wonderful review of the tune in Billboard and they raved about the solo,” he says. Perhaps more has been written about his solo than of the song itself.ĭespite the acclaim, Carlton was, and remains, nonplussed. It was straight improv, and it worked.” Very well, in fact. “People think I’m kidding when I say that, like I had worked the solo out beforehand, but I didn’t. “I was pretty familiar with the tune, so I just improvised,” he tells Guitar Player. Carlton strings together a series of tasty phrases that follow the underlying chord changes with a blend of inside and outside playing that is technically mind bending and emotionally satisfying. Steely Dan’s catalog is filled with remarkable guitar solos, but Larry Carlton’s brilliant work on The Royal Scam’s “Kid Charlemagne” remains the most celebrated. These cover you for the entire opening 30 bars, which, let’s face it, is a lot of music, so this is a good reason to learn a couple of shapes if ever there was one. But how should you tackle them yourself? First, there are two essential scales you’ll need to know: the B natural minor scale and the B Phrygian mode, both shown below. That’s a great tip from the man who plays the solos. I use my middle finger just to anchor my position on the neck.” “And that was what the vogue was at the time in the 1980s, so I have been playing those for a long time. “When guitar players first started incorporating arpeggios into their playing, before the whole Yngwie sweep-picking thing, arpeggios were played on two strings – not three or four strings,” he explains. And then I just slide right into those arpeggios.” And they are arpeggios played on two strings, Hammett specifies. “For the very last solo, I know how I want to start it, but then I am in an area where I can improvise for 16, 18 or 24 bars, and then Lars will hit a certain fill, which means that it’s up and it’s time for the arpeggio part. “I have been playing that song for so long now,” Kirk tells our sister publication Total Guitar. And the signature element he employs for the last solo is arpeggios. But it is the song’s timeless melodic solo that most vividly signals a stylistic shift in guitarist Kirk Hammett’s playing. That change is evident on “Fade to Black,” which features acoustic guitars and a nonstandard structure more akin to the “Stairway to Heaven” school of songcraft. Recorded at Flemming Rasmussen’s Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen in February and March 1984, Ride the Lightning, Metallica’s sophomore album, was more progressive and stylistically greater in scope than the all-out thrash assault of their debut, Kill ’Em All. Metallica’s first ballad features some of Kirk’s most epic playing. A detailed weather map allows you to apply a variety of information overlays. At Tier One (?$9.99/year), you get real-time animated lighting data and up to 30 frames of radar data, among other features. In addition to the $9.99 download, RadarScope offers subscription tiers that offer more data. That gives RadarScope a lot more detail than your typical weather apps. RadarScope's makers say the imagery in this app uses native radar data rendered in its original radial format. The app also helps you track the paths of storms using data from the U.S. With RadarScope installed, you can trck everything from tornados and severe thunderstorms to flash floods and marine warnings. These scans are interpreted by a computer and translated into an image.Serious weather watchers will want to turn to RadarScope for detailed satellite views that include NEXRAD Level 3 and Super-Resolution radar data. A complete set of scans takes around 5 minutes to complete. Doppler radars scan the horizon in 360˚ degrees in a set pattern of angles from very low (along the horizon) to very high (almost straight up). This process of emitting a signal, listening for any returned signal, then emitting the next signal, takes place very fast, up to around 1300 times each second. Computers analyze the strength of the returned pulse, the time it took to travel to the object and back, and the phase shift of the pulse. The radar instrument receives a signal from this reflected energy during its listening period. A small fraction of the scattered energy is directed back toward the radar. If the energy strikes an object (raindrop, snowflake, bug, bird, etc), the energy is scattered in all directions. The radar emits a burst, or pulse, of energy. NEXRAD (Next Generation Radar) stations obtain weather information (precipitation and wind) based upon returned energy. So when the Firebird 650 was launched in 1968 with both high pipes and lighting, it was less a compromise than a practical alternative to the Hornet, and it sold reasonably well. But BSA offered these heavy street (though offroad styled) bikes without lights or charging systems. These were stripped-down versions of the street Cyclone and Lightning models with a choice of high- or low-level exhaust pipes. In a curious piece of marketing philosophy, BSA had introduced street-scramblers in 1965: the 500cc A50 Wasp and 650cc A65 Hornet. Street scramblers, as they were called, were hot in the mid-Sixties: bikes like the Honda CL77, Triumph’s T100C, TR6C and T120C, and the Norton P11 were all designed to benefit from the interest in offroad racing - though few riders would ever actually take these heavy street bikes into the desert. A new, finned rocker cover was introduced in 1967, and this essentially became the Firebird’s power plant. The engine’s “square” dimensions of 75mm bore and 74mm stroke were housed in smooth, rounded casings soon to become known as the “power egg.” BSA steadily increased the performance of the new 650 from around 34hp to a claimed 52hp in the twin-carburetor Lightning Clubman of 1966. The twist in the tale? He must have fitted the Lightning’s gas tank, too, because the frame number prefix revealed the bike’s true personality - A65FS - the designation for a Firebird Scrambler.īirth of the ‘Bird The A65 designation means the Forgotten Firebird was built around BSA’s unit-construction twin-cylinder 650cc engine introduced in 1962. So there was the probable story: A broken chain had trashed the engine, and the previous owner had bought a 1972 Lightning parts bike and swapped out the engine. A good sprinkling of rust told of lengthy outside storage, and the paint told another tale: The original white headlight ears had been brushed black to tie in with the hand-painted Lightning gas tank. Likely, then, the old Beezer hadn’t enjoyed the most fastidious maintenance program. Punched in the back of the crankcase and primary was a three-finger-sized hole, certainly the result of a snapped drive chain. The original engine was also part of the package, and a quick look at the pieces told the story. (I should confess up front that I’m part of its history, because I sold it to him.) I first saw the bike advertised in the local newspaper as a 1969 BSA Lightning “basket case.” Checking the bike’s serial numbers, I could tell it was a 1970 model but with a 1972 engine in place. Humble beginnings Take Gary Carpenter’s 1970 BSA Firebird Scrambler, for example. All these speak to the past indignities suffered by our old iron. Then there are the stories told in the metal: the patina of worn paint from leathers rubbing on a gas tank rounded-off nuts attacked by mis-sized wrenches telltale boogers of silicone oozing from a hastily fitted primary cover. Sometimes it’s oral, passed on from owner to owner - although many sellers seem to prefer saying as little as possible! Sometimes the story is written in service notes, title documents and repair bills. Trouble is, they forgot to market it, and the Firebird stalled.Įvery old motorcycle has some history: sometimes it’s benign, and sometimes it’s not. Three years later, the company introduced the BSA Firebird Scrambler, its latest - and arguably best - variation on the theme. By some accounts, BSA launched the category in 1965 with its offroad-styled 500cc A50 BSA Wasp and 650cc A65 BSA Hornet. On Gen2, the code is "hit" on the right side of the rear axle (passenger side) with the inscriptions facing the front of the vehicle.BSA Firebird Scrambler Years produced: 1968-71 Total production: Unknown Claimed power: 52hp 7,000rpm Top speed: 105mph (est.) On Gen1, the code is "hit" on the right side of the rear axle (passenger side) with the inscriptions facing the front of the vehicle. The 1967 Firebird has the particularity to have a rear axle held by arms while in 1968 rear axle was hold only by the blades/spring of suspensions. The final drive ratio is identified with 2 or 3 letters codes. This is simply the number of screws holding the crown of the differential and incidentally also the number of screws of the rear cover of the bridge. We also frequently talk about of 10 or 12 bolts. Or is that your discs differential are dead! Conversely, if the car leaves well, then there is a limited slip. Then put pedal to the floor and if the car tends to make the "in-place" you have a standard type. It's very easy to know what type of differential is on your car, just stop on the bottom side of the road with a wheel on the asphalt and the other in the ground/grass/gravel. Two things to know, the final drive ratio and type.

And even in that case, Scion of the Ur Dragon is probably better (although tribal dragons scion builds aren't the most competetive usually). But Atarka isn't competitive because there are commanders that are literally better in every way unless you're managing to make tribal dragons do well. I'm not saying all of this to put down Atarka as a commander, or try to talk them out of building Atarka. The only way atarka would be better is in a situation where you can give other dragons doublestrike also, which isn't exactly the voltron situation we were talking about. Also, Prossh is amazing with cards like fecundity and skullclamp, while atarka isn't. This is ignoring Prossh being a built-in sac outlet (which is a big deal), working VERY well with Gaea's cradle, and having a 1 card combo in Food chain. To one shot, Atarka needs a damage doubler, which work just as well with prossh. Doublestrike doesn't stack though, so giving it to Atarka doesn't help. So what about straight up 1 hit potential? Prossh is better here also - due to black mana for giving infect (through Tainted Strike), and cards that give double strike like Assult Strobe, or even Psychotic Fury (which cantrips). So atarka doesn't really have an advantage here (I'd even argue prossh does, because of buried alive and entomb for anger). Because prossh is in Jund, any haste giving effect Atarka has access to, prossh does too. Now, of course, there might be a haste-giving effect. The next turn, prossh can attack, sac 6 kobolds, for 11 commander damage, atarka can cast atarka now. On that "6 mana turn" the prossh player can cast prossh, atarka does nothing. While it's not likely they'll hit 6 mana on turn 6, I'm going to refer to the arbitrary "turn they hit 6 mana". Let's imagine they both ramp at the same exact speed (which isn't likely because prossh has demonic tutor and vampiric tutor for getting good ramp cards). I'm sure OP can make a fun deck they'll enjoy playing, but for whatever strategy they want to play, there's likely better options.īut prossh comes with 6 extra "power" on his first attack due to his sacrifice ability. Pretty much, Atarka doesn't really do anything, which is fine for casual playgroups, but not competetive. And he's cheaper, and the kobolds help by chump blocking against more aggressive decks. Except prossh also gives you black for tutors, and has some pretty great combos you can fit in. Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth. As an example, if you want a commander who you can play, and "combo" with another card to attack for lethal, Prossh does that too (play him, attack next turn, sac 6 kobolds, he's an 11/5, give him infect or double strike). Atarka, World Render card database entry. Atarka doesn't really do anything except be a big attacker, and that's not great. Most expensive commanders either aren't as expensive as they seem (Karador, Tasigur), or are just insanely powerful (Prossh, Wanderer). The issue is expensive commanders in "aggro" lists. Voltron is solid in competetive - as an example, Rafiq can be built as a fairly strong infect voltron deck.
